The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

August 26 - 29, 1993 BJ's 13th Birthday

 

Thursday, August 26, 1993 HOT

 

I went to Dr. Petrone today for checkup. Came home, went to Norway at Ames. Done some school shopping for Brogan. Carmen and Brogan went and got their haircuts. THEY LOOKED LIKE MILLIONS. I wish it would stay this way, their hair. Came home. Esther got the supper.

 

 

 

Friday, August 27, 1993

 

Another very hot day. Up early to get ready and go to the yard sale at Sharon Goldsmith’s and Eleanor Harmon’s. They didn’t have much there as we expected. Came home, didn’t do much, on the back porch with the air conditioner going which is a godsend for us old people. Late in p.m. Susan came and gave me a shampoo and rinse. Dorothea came later and she and Susan here for supper. Betty took me to the sale then she went to camp for rest of the day.

 

 

 

Saturday, August 28, 1993

 

On the hot side, not quite as hot as the last two days have been. We got up as early as usual. Esther made cookies. David here after doing the chores. BJ came up this forenoon. Then about one Carmen, Brogan and BJ came with the gifts etc. for BJ’s 13th birthday. It was very cool and comfortable on the porch with the air conditioner going. That is such a godsend. Esther got the supper tonight.

 








 

Sunday, August 29, 1993

 

A nice day, not too hot. Esther over to Susan’s. David and Walt here this morning. Also Zac up for coffee. I read the papers. We looked at albums which are very good. Dorothea here a little while. Today we had a birthday for Billie Joe. It was very nice. She got a lot of nice gifts. Watch and a radio. Kim, Tom, Betty, Walt, Brogan, Arnold, Carmen, Cameron, Esther and Billie and me.
