The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

May 3 - 6, 1993

 

Monday, May 3, 1993 CHICKS CAME

 

A nice day. Today or early this morning Carmen went to the post office and picked up a box of 25 chickens. Brogan and Cameron both were very excited when they saw them. They got ready and got them into the coop and pen. I did a washing. Carmen came and she did the wash. Made the beds and other things. I got my letter off. Carmen took the checks down and cashed them. I paid her for everything.

 

 

 

Tuesday, May 4, 1993

 

A partly cloudy day. Some sunshine. Up, got the breakfast. Done the dishes. Then I got my clothes in washing. David came for coffee. Betty came early and got the cleaning to going. Carmen came at eight to pick Billie up and take him to the doctors for his regular checkup. He is quite the same. Tomorrow he has to go for his blood checkup etc. Dorothea came this p.m., took Billie over to Dr. Gordon’s. He said his eyes were okay. He got to have a blood checkup tomorrow. Betty S went and had a complete check up for heart. Will get the results tomorrow. Carmen and Arnold hauling dressing today. Brogan is so happy at the home down there.

A partly cloudy day. I got my store list done. Carmen came and got it. Dorothea called and got Billie, take him to the hospital for blood checkup. Carmen got the supper, done the bed, got the shopping done. Betty brought her flags up today. I made a Jell-O. I helped her with Cameron.

 

 

 

Thursday, May 6, 1993

 

A very nice day, very warm in p.m. I cleaned my desk draws and got the paper read. Carmen and Kim up to New Hampshire today. Carmen had a customer this p.m. Betty been working in her kitchen today. Carmen helped her in p.m. Cameron is very cute all the time. Carmen had a very good supper. Arnold brought the lawn mower home today.
