The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

April 18 - 20, 1993 New Horse

Sunday, April 18, 1993 horse came

It was a miserable day. It rained, it was cloudy and some clouds too. I wrote two letters today. Carmen and children called for a little while. Lorriaine dropped in. Betty up for a minute. Walt here for coffee. About 1:30 PM (blank) came down to Betty and Walt. The whole family was there to greet her. A very pretty beast. She will make a nice one for them to ride. Dorothea came in p.m., did Billie’s papers and visited. Lorraine called here, she was looking for her.

Well at last a nice sunny day. I got my letters off today. I also got my check book in good order. Cameron was here a few minutes. He was so good and cuter than a kitten. Carmen made a cheesecake for supper. I’m sorry about Brogan. I hope she will change and learn to be good with people and break down her silent way. She should lighten up for her own sake in life. Some reason she is like this. BIG FIRE AT WACO TEXAS. The place burned flat and a lot of lives were taken by the fire.

A quite nice day. I got up, got the breakfast, got my work done up then I did my washing. Betty came about 10 AM. She cleaned the house. Made the beds. Got supper to cooking. Brogan was with her. They stayed at Betty’s all night. She is so happy down there. On all news broadcasts today was the tragedy at Waco Texas. The world is all shook up over it. It will be a well remembered occurrence. A bad bad mess.
