The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

Tuesday, March 30, 1993

 

Another quite nice day. I did a wash and rest of the morning chores. Betty came and cleaned up the house. It looks nice. She got a good supper. Brogan got off the bus here. She and Betty got her bike out.

 

 

 

Wednesday, March 31, 1993

 

A very nice day, snow went a lot today. I didn’t do much today. I made out my store list. Carmen didn’t get to town. She had other things to do, two customers and had to go to work. This is to be the last day of March. The time is going so fast. And very bad weather continues. We have just had about three good days. Kim came and got the supper. Tom too. A very good supper.

 

 

 

Thursday, April 1, 1993 SNOW

 

What a mess this day turned out to be. It was cloudy when I got up. At about 8:30 to 9 it began to snow and it snowed so hard. Carmen, Cameron and Betty came. The snow came so bad all forenoon and day. It was sleety in p.m. Carmen couldn’t get the supper tonight so Dorothea came and got it.

 

 

 

Friday, April 2, 1993 NO SCHOOL

 

I done up my regular work. This weather is so sickening. Snow all around this morning and more snow coming today. Well I didn’t do much today. It was a miserable old gloomy day. I hate it. Well middle of the day there was a big blast here. Cameron came and he was a fast-moving bomb going through. I love to have them come. Things liven up now I tell you. I made out bills and Carmen came, took them to post office. Also the checks came, we got those cashed also.
