The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

May 24 - 27, 1993

 

Monday, May 24, 1993 Zak to Portland

 

When I got up the sun was shining. Middle of forenoon it began to get cloudy, later on in forenoon it began to rain. It rained off and on all rest of the day. About 9:30 Betty came. She cleaned up the house then she cleaned up the breezeway. It looks very nice. She got a good supper tonight also. Walt was here. They were going to wash windows but rained. Dorothea and Betty to town shopping. I did the washing. Zac to Portland to look for work. Well Zak got two jobs today. Tomorrow he will go and look for a rent for himself.

 

 

 

Tuesday, May 25, 1993

 

A quite nice day. I didn’t do much myself. I looked at papers. I made a Jell-O. Betty came, got the supper. Zac went out looking for an apartment. My house looks very nice and clean. Dorothea and Betty Smith to Portland today. Dorothea to have her teeth cleaned. Betty S to the eye doctor. A suicide in town today at 85 South High St., where Fern and Lloyd used to live. Carmen got most of her housecleaning done.

 

 

 

Wednesday, May 26, 1993

 

Well it was nice and sunny in forenoon. Then it clouded up again. Carmen came, got the store list and went to town. I done a few jobs etc.

 

 

 

Thursday, May 27, 1993

 

A quite nice day, it was mild. I kept Cameron for a while. I didn’t do much. Got a lot of papers read. Our flagpole broke over today. The wind blowed a lot today. Carmen called today, got a good supper.
