The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

June 29 - July 1, 1978

Thursday, June 29, 1970 HAY

A quite nice day except it was cloudy in PM and after supper had heavy showers, awfully lightening. Billie got his hay hauled from Erwin’s tonight. Carmen, Billie Deming, Betty and Walt helped get it, just before the awful shower. Went to town shopping was Susan today. Bill worked in the garden, got the first batch of strawberries.

Friday, June 30, 1978 Calf Born

A nice day but very windy this forenoon. The whitehead cow or heifer had her calf. A little whitehead heifer, very cute. I did a wash, dusted, washed windows and made cupcakes for the bake sale. Went down to Betty’s a little while. Carmen and Kim working like beavers. Zak went with Walt to WORK. He had a good time. Kim up here in PM and came up for supper and stayed all night.

A nice sunny day but on the windy side. I got up about 7. Got the breakfast, done up the work. Kimmy up about 8, but she didn’t feel good. As the day wore on she felt more sick to her stomach. She threw up several times. She went home about 5:30. She slept in PM. I went down to Betty’s, I done a lot of work for her and a wash. They worked up to the shelter. Billie got more hay up to Erwin’s today. He was busy all day. Bill down to hospital for blood test. Carmen had a headache today. Cows brought their calves up tonight.
