The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

July 2 - 5, 1978 4th of July

 

Sunday, July 2, 1978

 

A beautiful day. On the mild side, a dite of wind. I done up all the regular work. Dorothea and Dave came about 11 AM. Bill and Dave went up to Buddy’s and worked on his mowing machine, they got it together. Then they came home and they loaded the furniture we sold to Jeff.

 

 

 

Monday, July 3, 1978 Bill $242.30, mine $106.30, increase this month

 

A nice sunny day with some out wind most of the day. I got up early, got a cake made for Donny Levine and Carmen. I got breakfast, done the wash, cleaned up, got ready and we went down to Betty’s. Carmen, Freya and I to get Donny at Moose Cove Lodge in Sebago to get Donny. Came home, Betty, Zak and I, we took Fern to North Conway to shop. Billie and I called at Dawn’s in evening.

 

 

 

Tuesday, July 4, 1978

 

Well it was cloudy most of the day. We watched the racers go by. Also went to the 4th parade, it was very good. Then up to Susan’s for a very nice cookout.

 















 

 

 

 

Wednesday, July 5, 1978 CHAIR

 

A beautiful day, sunny and mild. I got up early and got my work done. Billie and I left, we went to Dorothea’s. She, Billie and I went shopping for clothes etc. for Billie. He got quite a few things then we came up to North Windham and he bought himself a new chair. It has been a beautiful day. Bill home all day alone. Zak up here to stay all night, to sleep on the new couch.
