The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

July 22 - 25, 1978

Saturday, July 22, 1978 a VERY HOT

Well another hot day, a little hazy. I done a lot of work, made rolls, baked beans for me and for Betty. I changed beds, washed floor, ironed etc. etc. I had a call from Mr. Saltman asking me to go to the show at LRHS. Said he would leave me tickets. I didn’t go. I guess there was a mixup. Billie mowed grass in Betty’s pasture. Carmen called a couple times. Walt, Kim, Zak and Vince gone up on Mount Washington today. They met Walt’s sister and family. Bill painted porch floor second coat.

Sunday, July 23, 1978 HOT HOT HOT

It has been such a hot day. Good old summer though. I done my work. I cooked a fowl, picked string beans with Billie, cooked a good old chicken dinner and had the Horton’s for supper. It cooled off during this evening.

Monday, July 24, 1978 Cool

A beautiful day, much cooler and very windy. It seemed good to have a nice comfortable day after so much hot weather. I did a big wash. Fixed and froze string beans. We got the back porch settled, it looks very nice.

Tuesday, July 25, 1978 Zak Very Sick

Zak still quite sick with tonsillitis. Betty and Walt took him to the doctors. He has been running a temperature of 103-106. I done my work, down to Betty’s. We fixed her China closet up in shed chamber and put the old old old pretty dishes in it. It looks very nice. I cooked a new roast tonight for supper, it was very good. I took some raspberries down to Betty’s after supper. Zak still not good but is now on penicillin. Carmen to the movies, she went swimming. I did my ironing this morning early.
