The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

August 11 - 14, 1978

Friday, August 11, 1978

Very hot and dry. We need rain so bad. We are having corn, squash (string beans), the last ones tonight, cukes, so far we have had a very good crop of vegetables etc. I done my regular work. Washed. Then in PM went to a barn sale with Betty and the girls. Zak did not come home today. Called at Fern’s in evening.

Saturday, August 12, 1978 HOT AND HOTTER

Another very hot day. I have been busy all day. Billie picked the shell beans, some vegetables for Dorothea. I shelled the string beans and I canned shell beans. Had 8 pints. Dorothea and Dave brought Zak home. Es, Cliff and kids left Ohio for home this morning. Betty at the shelter all day.

A very hot day. I didn’t have anything to do today. It was late when I got up. So I did the work up. I went down to Fern’s at about noon. We watched the bike riders go up by. Billie went with Lawrence, very late when they got back. Bill watched ballgames.

Monday, August 14, 1978 VERY DRY

This is a very bad drought. The garden is drying up fast. It has been another hot sunny day. I did a big wash, defrosted the refrigerator etc. I went down to Betty’s, we picked over the kids clothes to get ready to go school shopping on Thursday. Billie didn’t go to work until late this morning. The work is slack at M & M Casting’s. I did my ironing after supper.
