The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

September 4 - 7, 1978 School Start

Monday, September 4, 1978 Labor Day

Well it has been a nice day. Bill and Billie hauled up a lot of the wood. I did a big wash. Also other jobs and did the ironing and watched the 2 TV programs. Carmen and Kim called. Betty and Walt worked in the woods getting wood out. Kids are all excited about going to school tomorrow.

Tuesday, September 5, 1978 1ST DAY OF SCHOOL

Well the school buses began to roll again this morning for another year of school. Kids were very excited and they all looked so very nice in their new clothes. Betty, Susan, Joy and I all went up to Conway to Shaw’s. All told we paid them about $500 for merchandise.

Wednesday, September 6, 1978 COW BRED

Well it was quite cloudy with showers in a.m. but it cleared. I done a wash. Then went down to Betty’s, we picked her tomatoes, we canned the ripe ones, got the others ready for the pickles. Also rest of the ingredients. Fern was there. Also the brockle head cow bred.

Thursday, September 7, 1978

A lot of heavy clouds. Quite windy. I done my regular work. Got ready and went down to Betty’s to help her get her pickles canned. Then we got ready to take Zak to the Dr. Shields for a checkup. He is okay but didn’t have to go back for another year. We drove out to the trailer park where Pat lives. Fern had a dizzy spell. She was going with us.
