The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

September 12 - 15, 1978

Tuesday, September 12, 1978 To Portland and South Portland to do Zak’s birthday shopping

It was cloudy and rained most of the day. It cleared off in PM. Today Betty, Bill and I went to Portland to do Zak’s birthday shopping. We didn’t have very good luck. Nothing in the stores. Bill had the exhaust pipe put on the car. We didn’t get home until about 6:30 PM. A long day. We saw Dorothea. Jeff has had another accident, rammed into the rear of a guys car. I feel bad for them. Also the day before a big branch came down on to the top of his car and put a big dent onto the roof and busted his windshield up. Poor kid. I feel so sorry for him.

A beautiful day. I did a big wash and ironed. I watched programs in PM. Bill and Billie fixed the shed doors. Also Billie cleaned up the garden. He picked the green tomatoes and all rest that the frost would harm.

Billie cleaned up the front, flowers etc. Betty and I went to Norway to get a few things for Zak’s birthday. Kimmy has a guest home tonight.
