The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

May 1 -4, 1961

Monday, May 1, 1961

A nice day, on the cool side. I washed and ironed. Betty didn’t go to school. Bad cold and very tired. Mike went home this morning. Mike and Betty all made up when he left to go home. Linda up here tonight.

Tuesday, May 2, 1961 Snow and Rain

A miserable day. It rained and snowed today. I cleaned China closet, buffet etc. Cooked a pot roast. Betty up to Irene’s tonight. Bill took her up. Cleared off in evening. They had a bad chimney fire at Raymond’s last night.

Wednesday, May 3, 1961

Sunny. Cold and windy. I cleaned the shed chamber. Betty went to the dentist today the last time. Deer came out again tonight. Betty up to Irene’s in evening.

Thursday, May 4, 1961 TEETH

Warmer, sunny. I washed and ironed, cooked, cleaned up the general cleaning. Cleaned Betty’s closet and the bureau draws in Billie’s room. In evening Blanche and I went to the concert B. H. S. It was good. Betty’s last one. Bill got his new Teeth tonight.
