The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

February 24 - 28, 1961




Friday, February 24, 1961

It has been a cloudy day, snow and rain. Kennard called. I got supper ready early and then worked on my puzzle. Kids to Portland today with Rowena’s grandmother, came back here and stayed for supper, to town in evening. Billie sold his bull to Art Ward today, he will get him later.



Saturday, February 25, 1961

Cloudy day. Rained in p.m. It rained hard at night. I got my cooking done early. Rowena here all day and for supper. She and Betty to town after supper. Bill and I to town in p.m. I got the rinse for my hair. Betty and Linda gone to Auburn tonight up to Mike’s. Brud’s folks came. Dolores going back with them.



Sunday, February 26, 1961 Wyvern Smith 34, Donald Ayres 17

Cloudy all day. Kennard, Nola, Jeff, Nona, Brud, Verna, Kennie, Dot, Fern, Lloyd, Sally and Jean called. I got in clothes and ironed. Billie to Lodge meeting. Betty home from Mike’s about six. She had a good time.



Monday, February 27, 1961

School began. Cloudy this a.m., cleared off in middle forenoon. I washed. Irene and Kathy called. Fern called, she got a letter from Dorothea. Dawn, Linda and Rowena called. Rowena and Linda here all night.



Tuesday, February 28, 1961

I ironed, churned. A cloudy stormy day. Dot and Lorraine called. Blanche called.
