The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

March 20 - 23, 1961 Billie's Birthday

Monday, March 20, 1961

A cold wind. I washed. A cold wind today. It is very clear and springlike out. I got my snaps back today. Bill got his income tax return check back. Betty was happy today or this morning when she got up. Dolores called.

Tuesday, March 21, 1961 Dot Smith, Jeff Smith and Thena Allen birthdays

A very nice day. Clear and pretty. The snow is so bright. I ironed on the back porch. It is so nice having that all opened up. This time a year nice and warm. I made a pie. Kennard called today. No kids here tonight.

Wednesday, March 22, 1961 William Crook Junior’s birthday

Another very nice day. I churned, made a birthday cake. Fern sent up by Lloyd a nice grapenut pie for Billie’s birthday and Mama a pan of orange biscuits. I had steak, onions, salad, cake and ice cream.

Thursday, March 23, 1961

I washed. Clothes dried very good. I cleaned up more of the house. Betty and Linda to the prize speaking.
