The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

April 1 - 4, 1961




Saturday, April 1, 1961

A cloudy dismal day. Snowed and rained. I cooked. Betty home all day. In the evening she, Bill and Billie down to Lawrence Boynton’s. I went to town in p.m. and got photo albums. Betty picked the snaps over.



Sunday, April 2, 1961

Cleared off today. Betty got a lamb up to Joe Pikes. Dave here. Bill got a haircut. Mike came about 3:30 PM, walked up from Auburn.








Monday, April 3, 1961

A cold day. I washed. Took care of the lamb all day. It was so cold hanging out the clothes. In evening called at Ferns. Billie got a birthday card from Dorothea. Mike, Betty and David went fishing all day. Betty and Dave took Mike home after supper. Mike stayed here all night last night. $33. Billie bought a big registered Guernsey cow off Lawrence. He also had his beef dressed, one Raymond left him.





Tuesday, April 4, 1961

Another cold day. I ironed, done up the regular work. Linda came home with Betty tonight. Took the lamb up to Irene’s tonight.
