The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

March 24 -27, 1961



Friday, March 24, 1961

Cloudy and stormy. Betty home from school with a headache about noon. Went to bed to get rested to go up to Auburn to get Mike. I cooked, cleaned up the house, to town in evening. Set up till Betty and Mike came about midnight. Mike looked nice.



Saturday, March 25, 1961 Benjamin Boutilier’s birthday

A nice day. I did a little cooking. Mike and Betty up early, down town. Came home and Kathy Carsley came with them. They all went to the movies in p.m. Bill went down and got them. Up to Irene’s in evening. Billie gone down state with Lawrence after cattle. Cleared off early forenoon. Bill and I down to Jean’s in evening. She was over to Gordon’s.








Sunday, March 26, 1961

Kids up middle forenoon and up to Irene’s. Came back with Dave and Linda. Got a lunch and gone over to the mountain. In p.m. Mrs. Berry and I went to Auburn with them when they took Mike home.



Monday, March 27, 1961 a NICE DAY

I washed. This is been a very nice day. I washed, clothes dried good. Betty and Linda didn’t go to school. Betty has a sore throat. They got a lot of schoolwork done. Bill, Billie and I went to Portland after supper. They got their razors fixed etc. I did a little shopping.
