The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

April 28 -30, 1961

The Farm - Spring 1961

Friday, April 28, 1961

Fair, on the cool side. I ironed, churned, cleaned up the rest of my cupboards. Betty and Linda came home. Ann Wheaton came with them. They went back down town. Betty and Linda home for supper, back down town. Betty wants to see Mike tonight, wants to go to Auburn. Had a air raid practice today. Betty, David and Linda up to Auburn to get Mike. He came home and left Betty and went off smelting.

Saturday, April 29, 1961 Plant PEAS

A cloudy cold day. Aunt Ava called. Billie over to Oxford and bought some fence post. Also got some peas to plant. Bill set out some tomato plants and planted peas. Kids went up to Auburn and got Mike tonight. Mike and David went smelting. Mike came back here and stayed all night. Betty hurt because Mike didn’t spend the evening with her. I don’t blame her.

Sunday, April 30, 1961 Daylight time

Cloudy again. Bill and I up early, rest up late. Betty and Mike took off early. Betty to Linda’s, Mike to his grandmother’s. I hope they make up but I don’t know.
