The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

March 1 - 4, 1961



Wednesday, March 1, 1961

It was a nice day. I picked up the house. Worked on puzzle. Got a letter from Susan today. Kennard came down. Had chicken for supper. Betty down to Rowena’s for supper and evening.





Thursday, March 2, 1961

A cloudy day in a.m., cleared. Sun came out in p.m. My clothes dried good. I cleaned up my chambers.



Friday, March 3, 1961

A wonderful day. Very nice, warm, the wind blowed but it was warm. I done my ironing, got my windows washed. Took a bath, got ready to go to town. Betty and Linda came home from school. Betty put her SHORTS on, back down town to help decorate gym for dance. She came home for supper and back down town with us, went to the dance, gone to Auburn with Dave and Linda after Mike. Aunt Ava called in p.m. Got paid $33.

A very nice day. Warm and sunny, snow settled. Billie and Art moved the bull down to Arts. He bought him. Betty downtown in p.m. Down to Linda’s brother’s and babysat in evening.
