The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

Thursday, May 30, 1991

 

A very nice sunny day, not too hot or cold. I love this kind of weather. I did washing and ironing. Arnold and Walt hauled the docks up to camp. Carmen got to work tonight. She got the supper. Then went home, got supper for Arnold and his kids. Well Betty Smith been gone one week today. Carmen works tonight from 11 to 7.

 

 


 

Friday, May 31, 1991

 

Cloudy and raining all day. Had the house closed up all day. I done up regular work. Then I read paper, B News, Advertiser. Carmen came this p.m., cleaned up the house. Got the supper. She found two dead hens in her hen house this morning. She and Arnold gone to the antique sale tonight. Dorothea came this evening and done Billie’s paper and his toenails. Joy called also.

 

 

 

Saturday, June 1, 1991

 

Cloudy when we got up but the clouds left and the sun came out. David here this morning for coffee. Well Esther will soon be here Tuesday. I finished reading papers and got rid of them. Betty brought up the supper.

 

 

 

Sunday, June 2, 1991

 

A very nice day. I done up work, up to camp. They had a cookout. A very nice day.
