The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

July 27 - 30, 1991 Norma and Jason Arrive for 2 Weeks

 

Saturday, July 27, 1991

 

NORMA GAY KNICK AND JASON KNICK came tonight from California for a two weeks visit. I’ve been busy doing the work and reading papers to get caught up. Carmen came this p.m. She and Arnold been out to sales looking for tools. Bro here this p.m. Zac been working up to the Ridge House. Kim and Tom to Casco Old Home Days. Tonight to the airport to get Norma and Jason.

 

 

 

Sunday, July 28, 1991

 

Today they began their haying at Walt’s. He was up for coffee also Zack came a little later and had coffee. Betty, Walt and Zack left about two for Portland.

 

 

 

Monday, July 29, 1991 54 years ago Dorothea Jean Thomas, 54 years today

 

It has been a nice day. I washed, done regular work. About noon Carmen and Kim came and we went Brogan went up to see Dorothea and took her gifts up. I was glad to see Fern too. Well they finished up all the haying done today. About 6:30 PM. Walt, Betty and Zac returned home today.

 


 

 

 

 

Tuesday, July 30, 1991

 

Another rainless day, sunny and not too hot. I done the regular work. I cleaned the stove and did the ironing. David here for coffee. Zack also. I cooked chicken breasts for supper. Also Betty and Carmen picked string beans and peas. I got them ready for supper. They were delicious. Betty, Walt, Arnold, BJ were here also Zack and Jason. Had a good supper.
