The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

Wednesday, July 31, 1991

 

Nice and sunny in a.m. In p.m. clouds came in. Betty and Carmen moved the chicks this morning. Jason came, he and Billie went and got the exhaust pipe for his truck and got it on. Jason painted the house. Betty called and had Billie come down and mow the last hayfield down back of the barn. Dorothea and Betty gone to the dentist in Portland. Carmen cooked a good baked ham supper and beet greens, cornmeal muffins, a cheesecake. All were here again, same as last night.

 


 

 

Thursday, August 1, 1991

 

A sunny hot dry day. They worked on the hay. Zack, Billie and Arnold. Carmen came, cleaned the house today. It looks so nice until Cassie gets in. She is planning a trip this weekend. Well Dorothea took me to the throat specialist over to Lewiston, Dr. Lindbury, and my throat is coming back to its duty. He said it probably will be back to normal. Betty Smith rode over with us. Zack up for a while. I pray for good luck for him. They got the hay all in today.

 

 

 

Friday, August 2, 1991

 

A very hot DRY day. Jason got the back side of the house done today. It looks very good, now he has got to begin on the porch. Today Zack is packing to go to Portland. I sure hope he gets a good job. He will get a good job and get to going on his own. Carmen and Brogan up early this morning and Bro came to Betty’s. Carmen and Arnold left early for a couple days vacation trip up to Vermont and Canada. Billie mowed lawns. I cleaned the flat irons I use for doorstops. I cleaned the coffee pot. Zack called in to say goodbye. Bro up here this p.m. Walt took Zack to Portland.
