The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

August 7 - 9, 1991 Nanny's 81st Birthday

A nice sunny day. I done regular work. Cleaned up the back porch floor. I didn’t do much today. I got the supper. I read papers and magazines.

 

 

 

Thursday, August 8, 1991 81 YEARS, NEW TRUCK

 

Today I turned to 81 years. I had a very nice day. In evening was taken out to dinner at Shorelands by family members. Betty S, Betty H, Dorothea, Norma, Joy, Jason and Brogan. Got money and candy. Very pleased. Jason here today, he worked on the barn. Betty, Bro, Billie Joe and Dorothea called also Carmen dropped in. Dorothea to their dentist doctor and had some work done on her teeth. Today David got his brand-new truck. It is beautiful red and a silver stripe. He likes it very much. Also Kim’s wedding picture came out in the Bridgton News today. Very good. Friday, August 9, 1991

 

A nice sunny day. I done out regular work. Carmen dropped in for a minute. She went to the store, got milk for me. Nick and BJ was here and Brogan. She was so tired. I did a dite of wash. Billie has a lame shoulder. I think there is a person around I haven’t seen for a long time. The name Kimberly Allie Boutilier Horton Harriman. I miss seeing her.
