The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

July 19 - 22, 1991 Daddy's 63rd Bithday

 

Friday, July 19, 1991

 

Another very very hot day. It has been the hottest today. I didn’t do anything today for work. Carmen came and made up the beds. And vacuumed. Betty called in p.m. I did a wash of sheets etc. Also got my papers all read and got late supper. Betty and Walt up to camp for Walt’s 63rd birthday. A boo-boo.

 

 

 

Saturday, July 20, 1991 Walt 63

 

Walt’s birthday 63. Up to camp he and Betty and some others. Carmen out for a cookout supper, friends over to Oxford of Arnold’s. I washed. Carmen came and vacuumed.

 

 


 

Sunday, July 21, 1991 Milan 71st birthday

 

Another quite warm day. I done the work. Went up to camp, all went swimming. Not me. It was a nice day, but very hot.

 

 

 

Monday, July 22, 1991

 

Hot Hot. I did a wash. Carmen came, she did some odd jobs. Got supper to going. She and Betty picked peas. I shelled them. We had them for supper. Very good. Arnold was here. Carmen has got to go to work tonight 11 to 7.
