The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

July 15 - 18, 1991

 

Monday, July 15, 1991 Grammie Smith’s birthday 101 years old today

 

A nice day, sunny and very warm. I done a washing. Got Billie’s lunch. Then went with Betty to town, up to Sweden, Waterford, Norway, Harrison and home. Carmen came, got the supper. She has to work from 11 to 7 tonight. Betty brought up some snaps. I fixed some dresses.

 

 

 

Tuesday, July 16, 1991

 

Hot. I done work, did the ironing. Worked on dresses. A man got in the ditch up above here. Betty and Brogan came a couple times. They brought some vegetables out of their garden. Carmen worked until seven this morning. Came home and slept till 1 PM and back to work at 3 PM to 11.

 

 

 

Wednesday, July 17, 1991

 

Another very hot day. I cleaned up the dog hairs all over the house. Cleaned off the front of the couch. It has been a very hot day.

 

 

 

Thursday, July 18, 1991

 

VERY HOTall day. Our water between here and the well had a broken pipe and it all leaked out. Now got to get that taken care of. Rodney Williams came and got the well back together. It didn’t last long. Up to camp today. It was so hot. Dorothea here and got the supper. Billie down to see Walt about getting the ditch dug so as to get the water to going. Kim and Tom were up to camp today also the water is getting low on the beach.
