The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

October 8 - 12, 1957



Tuesday, October 8, 1957

Rained some and cloudy. I ironed, cooked, cleaned up the other separator. Betty to the movies with Dawn and Steve tonight. Bill took them down, Billie gone down to get them. Donnie fair.



Wednesday, October 9, 1957 Warm

Cleared off nice today. I churned, cleaned up some. Mama up to Old Bills with Aunt Ava and Uncle Lewis. Bobby called. Dolores called. I went up to Dolores’s.



Thursday, October 10, 1957

Partly cloudy, warm. The final ballgame between the New York Yankees and Milwaukee Braves. I didn’t do much today.

I cleaned up the house, cooked.



Saturday, October 12, 1957 Bessie had her calf today

A very good day. We got a letter from Dorothea and Dennis today. I cooked and cleaned up the house. Billie didn’t work, in p.m. he took me down to Mrs. Dearborn’s and I got her camp ready for the winter. Billie and I spent the evening with Aunt Ava and Uncle Lewis. Betty went to the school dance in evening, to the ballgame at Norway in p.m.
