The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

November 9 - 12, 1957



Saturday, November 9, 1957

A very nice day, cold. Bill didn’t work. I got the pork salted today. I made rolls. Bill down in the woods hunting and piled up wood. Betty got bird food today. I cleaned Billie and Mama’s rooms and bathroom today. Mrs. Ayers called me today.



Sunday, November 10, 1957

A fair day. Some cloudy. Cold. I did up the work in a.m. Bill helped Lloyd. Betty walked down to Ferns. In p.m. I got the work done than began to write letters. Rayburn and Karen called. Lloyd called. Raymond called. Fern and Lloyd called, Aunt Ava and Uncle Lewis and Holly. In late p.m. Fern, Lloyd, Bill, Betty and I went for a ride up to the old Leon Emerson place in Sweden. It was sure spooky. Cold up there too.



Monday, November 11, 1957

Very cold today and was last night. I washed today a big wash. Betty home from school. Steve here today. Also Holly late p.m. Ground froze today. Bill and Billie worked today. David Nevers got a deer today, his first one. He is 14 years old.



Tuesday, November 12, 1957 Permanent

A nice day. I ironed and cooked. Dolores Back home today. Tonight I went over to Jean’s and got a permanent tonight.
