The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

November 25 - 28, 1957 Thanksgiving at Fern's



Monday, November 25, 1957

A very cold day, ground is freezing today. I washed. Nancy and George wedding picture in the paper today. Hazel Chadbourne called me today. Betty home early tonight. President Eisenhower taken sick today. Called a chill.



Tuesday, November 26, 1957

A very cold day. President Eisenhower still sick. It is called a slight stroke. All reports are encouraging for a quick recovery. I ironed, made a pie. The Christmas order came today. Some things have got to come yet. Dolores and Holly called before supper. In evening Raymond called. He asked Billie to go to Vermont with him tomorrow.



Wednesday, November 27, 1957

A nice day but cold. I cooked, cleaned up the house. Two more packages came from Sears. Betty home from school early. Bill finished work over to Jim’s today. President better.





Thursday, November 28, 1957 Thanksgiving

Warmer today. Didn’t get up very early. Down to Fern and Lloyd’s for dinner. Uncle Os up to Mary’s. Donnie’s last Thanksgiving with this family. Chicken, roast pork, sweet potato, white potato, turnip, squash, onions, celery, olives, two gravies. Hot rolls, graham nut bread, cranberry sauce, pumpkin, pecan, apple pies and ice cream, Indian pudding, cream, filled cookies, donuts, fruit, nuts. VERY GOOD Betty rode Old Ned.
