The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

Sunday, October 13, 1957

Another nice day, went for a nice long ride in p.m. with Kennard and Dolores, Mama went. Bill, Billie and Betty worked over to the spring getting the spring ready for us to use. Our big well is very low. For the ride we went up to Hebron Academy, Hebron Sanatorium up to Paris Hill onto West Paris, Bryant Pond, Lock Mills and Bethel. Bought 18 hens from Aunt Ava and Uncle Lewis. Billie and I got them home tonight.



Monday, October 14, 1957 Wedding pictures came today

I went downtown with Dolores to the one cents sale at the drugstore. Didn’t do much after I got home. Dorothea and Dennis wedding pictures came. In evening Fern and Lloyd called. Robert and Blanche, Edith and Justin, Robert Ava and Merle Grover. Also an insurance man called to see Bill. All thought the pictures was so good.



Tuesday, October 15, 1957

Another nice hot day, no rain. Dolores and I went to town, down to Hazel Chadbourne’s to give her Dorothea’s wedding pictures and piece for the paper. We went over to Flossie’s. Billie home at noon and brought over some water to wash with. Dawn called. Betty got her snapshots. Alton Luck died this morning.
