The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

December 20 - 23, 1957 Demings Arrive For Christmas

Friday, December 20, 1957

Rained again today. I washed kitchen curtains. Cleaned up the house. Bill and Billie put the pipe upstairs for the register. In p.m. Kennard called. I cooked some. In evening I ironed my kitchen curtains and did my ironing of the other clothes. I washed. Billie and Bill made ice cream. Letter from Dorothea and Dennis, also Esther. Snow all going tonight. Rained hard.

Saturday, December 21, 1957 No Snow

Rained hard in a.m. About noon it cleared off. I done up my work. Churned. Billie took me to town late in p.m. Betty came home from Kay’s and they moved the birds upstairs. Esther and family left this morning for Maine and home. Cleared off.

Sunday, December 22, 1957

A very nice day, warm. We put on the finishing touches, and waited for the Deming’s. In p.m., Dot, Kennie, Wyvern, Nola and Jeff called. Also Lloyd called. He and Bill went to Denmark. In evening Fern, Lloyd and Uncle Os called. About 6:30 they arrived, Cliff, Es, Susan and Billie. We all were so glad to see everyone.

Monday, December 23, 1957 Nice Day
No washing today. We talked, played with the baby. A good time. We had broiled T-bone steaks for supper. Also Indian pudding. Susan down to the doctors for a cold. Bill worked today down to her Ernie Stevens with Hayd. Aunt Ava and Uncle Lewis called, also Raymond. In evening Kennie and Dot.
