The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

November 5 - 8, 1957




 Tuesday, November 5, 1957 Object in the Skies

I ironed. We looked over catalogs. Dawn brought Betty home from school. Then Betty up to Dawn’s for supper and all night. Today an unidentified object has been seen in the sky. They think it is from another planet. Pig went today.



Wednesday, November 6, 1957

A cold day, fair. Mama went to East Stoneham and Paris with Aunt Ava. I cleaned the living room. Churned. Betty to movies with Holly tonight. Lloyd came up tonight and cut up the pig. Took the hams down to Chapmans to be sent down to be smoked.



Thursday, November 7, 1957 I cleaned dining room and cooked

These days are great and exciting days for the whole world. With two Russian satellites in the sky. Last one sent into space has a dog in it. They have been seen by many people. Passed over New England early this morning. The unidentified object in the sky is still seen and is expected to come from some planet, probably from Venus. We were warned that they were coming to earth in November. Dawn up this morning.



Friday, November 8, 1957

It was cloudy and cold. Kennard called. I cleaned rest of the upstairs. Betty got her rank card today for the first time in high school. Good rank. Donnie good today.
