The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

November 17 - 20 ,1957



Sunday, November 17, 1957

A cloudy day, not very cold. Mama up to Kennard’s and Dolores’s. Bill worked on blower. Billie did odd jobs. Took separator up to Dennis Chadbourne. I worked on Christmas order. Kennie and Dot called in evening. Fern, Blanche and I went down to M. E. Church to the concert. Donnie not too good. Betty not home today.



Monday, November 18, 1957

A very nice day. I washed, finished up the Christmas order. Mama down to Ferns. I was here alone with Donnie. I rested so much. My Christmas club check came today small $12. Donnie not very good tonight.




Tuesday, November 19, 1957

 Rain. I cooked and churned. Bill didn’t work today because of rain. Wells all have water in them now. Bill took me to town. I sent off my Christmas order at Sears. Also one far Mama to Sears. Bill fixed blower on furnace. Betty up to Dawn’s for her birthday. Holly too.



Wednesday, November 20, 1957

A good day. I done up the housework. Billie home today, bad feet. Sent money for Christmas cards. Betty to the senior play tonight. Kay came back up and stayed all night with her.
