The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

May 25 - 30, 1956



Friday, May 25, 1956

Fair, awful cold. I cleaned the cellar way and cellar and deep freeze. Ruth Littlehale called. Over to doctors tonight with Donnie. Bill and Billie hauled off limbs over in back field with Chet’s tractor. Betty to movies in evening with Jill. Bob went to Portland with our car for checkup. Very cold this morning and heavy frost this morning. Jim’s corn all killed. 27°. Got cards and letter from Dorothea.





Saturday, May 26, 1956

A nice day, little warmer. I cooked, washed floors. Jill here all day. I cleaned the paintbrushes.



Sunday, May 27, 1956

A very rainy day, didn’t get up very early. Lloyd called. Bill Ridlon called. Bill sold his power saw today. Kennie and Dot here in p.m.



Monday, May 28, 1956

A very cold cloudy day. I did very big wash. Over to Raymond’s in evening.



Tuesday, May 29, 1956

A very nice day. I cleaned the grain room. Churned and cooked. Betty and Jill gone to the movies. Mama, Donnie, Bill and I down to the cemetery after supper. Lloyd made a dooryard call.



Wednesday, May 30, 1956

Cloudy all day. Betty to the parade in PM. I ironed and cooked. Charlie and Jean called in the p.m. Raymond called in evening. Blanche brought my new plastic drapes over this p.m. for the new bathroom.
