The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

May 21 - 25, 1955 Off To Ohio To See Dorothea Graduate



Saturday, May 21, 1955

Started at 5:50 from home. Very nice day and beautiful ride. Ate dinner in Bennington,Vermont. Supper in Bridgewater, New York and stayed in Seneca, New York, just outside Auburn. Kennie, Dot, Joy, Bill and I are the ones that went. A very nice pretty morning as we left early for Ohio.



Sunday, May 22, 1955

Ate breakfast at Wernern’s Grill at Lima, New York, ate at 7 AM. Ate dinner at Ashtabula, Ohio. Got to Esther and Cliff’s about 4. They was so glad to us and we was to see them. Had lunch and went to baccalaureate. Went over the new Norton High School where Dorothea went to school and met her teachers and classmates.

Monday, May 23, 1955

Showery all day. We went to Barberton shopping, came home, had dinner. Kennie, Bill, Dorothea, Joy and Susan went over to where Cliff works. Went to Portage Lake in evening for a ride, had a good time. Dorothea  and Joy went to tack (?).


Tuesday, May 24, 1955

Cloudy and showers in a.m. Did up the work. Went up to Dot and Carl’s to see their new home. Kennie and Bill over to golf course in p.m. Cliff, Kennie, Bill went to the ballgame in evening in Cleveland. Kids went to school in a.m. Called at Bauns (?). Carol here for supper.

Wednesday, May 25, 1955

Raining day all day. Esther washed, we did up housework. Kennie and Bill into Barberton with Carl and Dorothy to Seeberling Rubber Company. In p.m. we all went into Akron with Dorothy McCaman to shop. Dorothea went in and had pictures taken. Cliff took us out for a ride over to the strip mines (coad) and out to the big blimp hanger in Akron. Went over 100 miles. Called home. Call on Bawn’s in the evening.
