The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

June 5 - 11, 1955





Sunday, June 5, 1955

Cleared off to a nice day. Bill and I took Mama down to the cemetery. Called at Aunt Ave’s. In eve we went over to Aunt Linnie’s. Rayburn, Joan, Karen, Dot, Kennie, Fern and Uncle Os And Blanche called In P.M.



Monday, June 6, 1955

Very nice hot day. I washed, put on screens, washed kitchen floor. We ate outdoors on the new picnic table.



Tuesday, June 7, 1955

Cloudy. I made two lemon pies, wrote to Mr. Ayers for shoes.



Wednesday, June 8, 1955

Churned, done up the housework. Cloudy and showers.



Thursday, June 9, 1955

Cloudy and cold. Cleaned up the house. Cleared off in p.m. Kind of fair. Went to B. H. S. Graduation. Delores, Fern, Dorothea and I.



Friday, June 10, 1955

Very nice day. Did a lot of odd jobs I wanted to get caught up on. Betty finished school. Dorothea gone down to Dot Libby’s for the graduation ball.



Saturday, June 11, 1955

Cloudy, some rain especially in evening. Went to town. Cooked. Dorothea and Dot Libby here for supper. D. Went back with her and went to movies, stayed all night and went to church.
