The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

June 19 - 24, 1955



Sunday, June 19, 1955

Very hot. We ate outside tonight. Fern, Lloyd and Uncle Os up. Dorothea got home from her trip up to Winthrop with the girls. Mama not very good.



Monday, June 20, 1955

They began cutting the timber. I did a very big wash today. Dorothea didn’t get up very early. Hot. Charlie called this morning for eggs.



Tuesday, June 21, 1955

I churned and did a very big ironing. Cloudy. Betty down to Kale’s today.



Wednesday, June 22, 1955

Very hot. Began to mow lawns. Aunt Ava and Uncle L. called. Dorothea over to Farmington with Sandra Gardiner. Very bad showers at night. Sally, Gordon and kids called in eve.




Thursday, June 23, 1955

Nice day. Betty and I mowed lawns. Dorothea cooked. Check came. Bill, Dorothea and I went to town. Got my gallon jar Miracle Whip.



Friday, June 24, 1955

Cloudy, cold and showers in late evening and night. Dorothea over to Aunt Ava’s for today and night. Bob got two dozen eggs. Dorothea went down to Barbs to begin work tomorrow.
