The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

It was a good day. I cleaned up the house, Bill and I called up to Hayd and Helen’s in evening. Dorothea came home tonight to stay and for her day off tomorrow. Lawrence Flint Jr. brought her. Fern not very well, had a bad spell with her arm.

Friday, July 8, 1955

Very nice day, quite hot. Dorothea here all day, she did some mending and made another checkerboard cake. Mama not very good today. I churned. Mowed lawns, washed. Had Brud and family and Kennard up for afternoon and evening. Ironed. Raymond over in evening.

Saturday, July 9, 1955

Hot. All day very hot and humid during the night. Billie mowed today rest of the field and Dick Carsley’s field. Went to town in p.m. Dorothea up in p.m. for a little while. Bill, Raymond and Betty got scattering in. Betty raked them with Raymond’s tractor.

Sunday, July 10, 1955

Very hot and humid all day. Bill and Billie hayed all day. Raymond, Kennard and Hayd helped Gordon Sanborn bail it. Delores called in p.m. Dorothea up in p.m. from camp. I didn’t do hardly any work.

Monday, July 11, 1955

Very nice day, sunny, cooler and no humidity. I washed and cooked. Daisy and her lamb went tonight. Elmer Fogg bought them. Hated to see them go. Two nice pets,  the little one was so cute. We are going to miss them.
