The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

Cooked. Did up the housework.



Thursday, April 7, 1955

Down to Ferns today. She fitted a dress pattern to me and cut out my dress. Pretty good day. Kennie, Dot, Rayburn, Lorraine, and Phonie up in eve. Also Hayd and Helen.



Friday, April 8, 1955

Cold, windy. Mama not very good today. Bill, Billie and Betty over to see some sheep tonight at Ev. Douglass. Cooked and churned. Bobby here most all afternoon.



Saturday, April 9, 1955

Nice day. Get my work done early. Bill and I went to town and done some shopping. Blanche, Joy and (?) Muriel called. Blanche gave Betty a shampoo and set her hair. Mama pretty good.



Sunday, April 10, 1955 Easter Sunday

Very nice warm day. Bill fixed porch floor, painted along roof of porch. He and Billie went down to Lawrence’s. We had a ham dinner. Betty went to sunrise service and to church on this Easter. Evelyn and Bill Ridlon called. Mama better.

Monday, April 11, 1955

Very nice day. I washed and ironed. Washed out on the back porch for first time this season. Kennie and family up tonight. Kennard and Aunt Ava called in p.m.



Tuesday, April 12, 1955

Not so warm today. Got up early this morning. Fern, Lloyd and I took Mama to Portland. Lloyd was called on jury. Bill did a lot of raking today in the yard. It looks very nice. Bill, Betty and I went down to Jean’s tonight. Charlie not feeling very well. Mama back to Eye and Ear Hospital again for second time.
