The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

March 11 - 15, 1955



Friday, March 11, 1955

Blanche, Joy, Fern and I went to Portland to see Mama and Billie. Billie didn’t feel very good yet the doctors sat him up on edge of bed. Was in operating room two hours. Mama very sick after being in operating room three hours. We stayed and Blanche got her comfortable.



Saturday, March 12, 1955

Nice day. Did a lot of work around the house. Went to town in p.m.



Sunday, March 13, 1955

Cloudy. Fern, Lloyd, Kennard, Bill and I went to the hospitals to see Mama and Billie. Mama was better and so is Billie. Talked with Es and Dorothea and Milan.



Monday, March 14, 1955

A nice warm day. I washed and churned. Aunt Ava and Uncle Lewis called in p.m.



Tuesday, March 15, 1955

Kind of cloudy. Blanche, Aunt Ava and I went to Portland with Dorothy Prescott to see Mama and Billie. Mama said she felt the best she had for a long time, still having some pain. Billie had a temperature. A load of bedding came. Donnie down to Ferns.
