The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

March 16 - 20, 1955 Billie Home From Hospital



Wednesday, March 16, 1955

Rained and foggy. I did a big ironing and rest of the work. Kennie called and Kennard and Chet, also Aunt Ava.



Thursday, March 17, 1955

Very cold and windy. No word from Portland. I churned. Aunt Ava called in p.m.

March 17, 1955 Dorothea off to school 



Friday, March 18, 1955

Cloudy. No wind. No word from Billie this morning. I called Dr. Ward this p.m., Billie still has a temperature. Got to stay longer. Late in p.m. I got a call from M. G. H. that Billie can come home. Bill and I went in to get him. Called on Mama. She is pretty good. Fern came up to stay with Betty and Donnie. Kail up here too. Milan came late in the night. Billie restless all night.



Saturday, March 19, 1955

Milan, Fern, Joy and I went to Portland to see Mama. She was a little restless but better in p.m. Milan took us down. Billie fair. Delores went to Massachusetts today, Brud came for her.



Sunday, March 20, 1955

Fair. Not very cold. Billie better. Milan left for home at one today. Aunt Ava and Uncle Lewis called to see Billie. Jack and Sylvia called to see Billie.
