The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

April 1 - 5, 1955 Cynthia Joane Smith Born



Friday, April 1, 1955

Mama up again today. Aunt Ava and Uncle Lewis called. Blanche came over and cut her hair. (Mama’s).



Saturday, April 2, 1955

Fair. They brought up a 1950 Chevrolet for McDonald’s Motors today, we tried it out. A fleet line blue. It is in good order but not what we really wanted. Didn’t do much of any work. Fern, Lloyd, Bob and Blanche called. Mama not very good today.



Sunday, April 3, 1955

Cloudy and cold. We tried out a 1950 Plymouth today from McDonald Motors. Kennie, Dot, Kennard, Aunt Ava, Uncle Lewis, Lloyd and Kennard called. We called at L. T. R. today. She paid me $10 today. Joy and Blanche also called. Mama got her clothes on today.



Monday, April 4, 1955

Cleared today. I washed. Very nice in p.m. Clothes got dry. I went to town in p.m. with Billie. Aunt Ava and Uncle Lewis called also Kennard. Down to Stella Cole’s in eve. Mama feels a little stronger.



Tuesday, April 5, 1955

Very good day. I’ve cooked and ironed. Fern and Uncle Os came up this p.m. Billie raked a little in the front lawn today. Bill brought home a new car tonight, a Plymouth 1950, dark blue very pretty. Bought it at McDonald Motors. Mama feels pretty good, her eyes not too good. Cynthia Joane Smith born in New York City at 11:30 AM to Carlton and Phyllis Smith. No. 1
