The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

March 22 - 25, 1965 Billie's Birthday



Monday, March 22, 1965

Billie 34 today. Had a cookout of T-bone steaks, salad, baked potatoes, asparagus salad and muffins. Banana splits and birthday cake. Fern up for supper. He got several cards, $17 in money and a batch of his favorite donuts from Fern and Lloyd. Very cold. Washed. Craig Fleck bad accident.



Tuesday, March 23, 1965

Partly cloudy, still cold. I done up my regular work, ironed. Took care of the clothes. Churned, cooked two fowls. Betty, Carmen and I took a ride down to Raymond to see the car accident and car of Craig’s.



Wednesday, March 24, 1965 Carmen’s haircut

A very nice clear day. Still on the cold side. Done up regular work, done a bit of mending. In p.m. Betty and I took Carmen down to Bessie’s, got her hair cut.



Thursday, March 25, 1965

LC Andrews order off today $30.06. I done up my work. Betty, Mike and Carmen to Norway and town etc. I worked on my quilt. The Negroes marched into Montgomery today. A very nice day. Wrote to Susan. Got a new parakeet.
