The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

April 15 - 18, 1965 JOBS

Thursday, April 15, 1965 Water thawed out in the barn

A nice sunny forenoon, it clouded up in PM. I did my ironing. Mike fixed Carmen’s fence. Cleaned up the work bench. Betty and I went to see Mr. Lord for Esther. We put the TV back where it belongs. Billie bought a lot of meat and other groceries tonight. Betty all upset today. Kennard and Rosalie called.

Friday, April 16, 1965 Betty and Mike got JOBS

Rained good all day and we needed that. I did some draws and closets. Betty and Mike down to the Bridgton Knitting Mill and each got a job to go to work at 11 PM Sunday to 7 AM Monday. Betty and I to town in evening, called at Ferns.

Saturday, April 17, 1965

Partly cloudy, a little on the raw, cold and windy day. Done my regular work. A dite of cooking. Billie worked at Lawrence’s. Mike raked rocks. Snow tonight.

Sunday, April 18, 1965

Tonight Betty and Mike off to work at the Bridgton Knitting Mill. First time Betty ever worked away from home on a big job. Kennie, Dot called. Wesley Gorman here and they bulldozed the mess from the barn off. A sunny day. Talked with Dorothea and Jeff and Den.
