The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

February 22 - 25, 1965



Monday, February 22, 1965

Cold, awful cold and windy. Betty and I move TVs, tables etc. She is expecting a new one. She has given us her old one which is a very good one. I’m glad of it. Washed. Louise up here. She will buy Betty’s hi-fi.


Tuesday, February 23, 1965 Kristie

A nice day, awful cold. I done up my regular work, got the clothes in. Louise here all day. Betty got her new TV, radio AM/FM and hi-fi combination set. Very pretty. It was delivered from Norway. Tonight Billie and I to Kristie up to Bethel to Dr. Hudson, the vets. I hope she understood.



Wednesday, February 24, 1965

A very nice day. Kristie operated on this morning at the vet’s in Bethel by Dr. James Hudson. Female organs removal. I did regular work, ironed, churned. Carmen has an awful cold. Janet called. Big storm warnings.



Thursday, February 25, 1965

Cold this a.m. Kristie came home. She was so glad to get home. Carmen better of cold. Betty and Mike went after her. Fern and Lloyd called. Read and figured. Bill back to work after supper.
