The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

January 25 - 28, 1965


Monday, January 25, 1965 Bill worked all night last night

A very nice warm sunny day. I did my washing. Washed some floors, cooked chicken or fowl for supper. Made a nice apple pie. Betty paid on my count for me. Joe Hatch plowed yard. Betty up to Lil’s in p.m. Took Carmen out in p.m. Kennard called. I went over to Aunt Ava’s in evening. Billie took me over and came after me. Bill to bed very early. He is tired after working all last night, no sleep.



Tuesday, January 26, 1965 Billie Deming’s birthday

Done up my regular work. I got the clothes in. I did my ironing. I made a custard pudding. I cooked a piece of ham. I worked on my quilt project, I did my mending. Clouded up in PM. Letter from Dorothea.



Wednesday, January 27, 1965 WOOD CAME

I did a dite of cooking. Worked on my quilt. Billie is all upset tonight. Bill to bed early tonight. Billie put the wood over.



Thursday, January 28, 1965 SENT FILMS

A beautiful day. Got windy and a dite colder. I done up my housework. Worked on my blanket. Betty and Mike away in PM. Aunt Ava called. In evening Billie, Carmen and I called at Ferns. Betty and Mike over to Auburn, Mike’s mother’s.
