The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

January 21 - 24, 1965



Thursday, January 21, 1965

A nice clear day. Done up my regular work. Betty and Mike out to work to get their house. They went to see the man that owns it. Then to the bank. We hope they get it. Called at Ferns. Betty, Mike, Carmen and I. Bill up to see the house with Betty and Mike. Fern still black and blue. Carmen not too good.



Friday, January 22, 1965 Packages from Adair’s.

Done regular work. Watched my programs, did some mending. Bill brought home a good check tonight. $82.05. Regular pay $69.86. He and I to town in evening and called at Jean’s. Betty and I up to see her house early this morning. Called at Fern and Lloyd’s. Fern feels okay. Betty and Mike did some shopping for Aunt Ava. Billie took her to the doctors tonight. Today we had nice gifts from Dorothea and family. Very nice. All fit very well.



Saturday, January 23, 1965

Partly cloudy. Billie worked till noon. Done regular work, did a dite of cooking. Betty over to Bob’s and done some cleaning. Fern and Lloyd called a little while. Marilyn Hunt and daughter called to get Phil. Washed kitchen windows.



Sunday, January 24, 1965

Snowing this morning. Betty, Carmen and I took a ride, went to see a small place for sale over on other side of Lake. Also Betty’s place??  Done regular work. Wrote to Dorothea and Es.
