The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

Nice day. Kennard called. Warm. Esther and Cliff wedding anniversary.

Sunday, May 7, 1944

Bill didn’t work. Raining. Bill, Billie and I went down and hauled up wood. Bob and Kennie’s folks up. Dorothea not well. She went down to Bob’s to stay all night.


Monday, May 8, 1944

Bill stayed to home. He and I picked dandelions. Betty Louise helped. Papa and Bill finished dump cart. Bill and Billie over to Raymond’s a little while. Blanche brought Dorothea home sick tonight with measles. Bill sowed the ground.

 
Tuesday, May 9, 1944

Bill stayed at home. He fenced the lane. Dorothea quite sick with measles. Bill and I went up to Minnie's. Billie and Val went suckering.



Wednesday, May 10, 1944

 Bill home. He and Papa fenced across the pasture and took in the new pasture.


Thursday, May 11, 1944

Bill went to work. Work two shifts. Billie broke his bicycle. I cleaned Papa room and we did a big wash.



Friday, May 12, 1944

I want to town this a.m. Cleaned Dorothea’s room today. Nice hot day.
