The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

February 5 - 11, 1944

Saturday, February 5, 1944

Bill, Dorothea and I went to town. Called at Kennard's, Kennie's, Fern's and Bob's. Bill and Billie went up to Waterford . Bill sick with cold, didn't work. Kind of cold.


Sunday, February 6th, 1944

Papa, Bill and Billie went fishing. The girls and I stayed home. Kennard called. Lloyd and Fern came, Fern spent PM here for supper. Robert and children came up. Nice day. They got 26 pickerel.

Monday, February 7th, 1944

I made arrangements to Norway Hospital for Dorothea. Dr. Nelson. Tom Halbert died. Blanche came home from M (?) H. Dorothea stayed down with Joy. Bill went to town. School bus didn't have to wait for kids this morning. Cold all day. Baby fussy. I washed today. Bill worked. 2 doz S.Y.



Tuesday, February 8th, 1944

Ironed. Bill worked took 6 doz eggs to S.Y. Billie not feeling good tonite. Dorothea and Mama still away. Red Cross hospital blowed up. COLD.


Wednesday, February 9th, 1944

Billie home sick. 20 below, Mama and Dorothea came home from Bobs. B took eggs to S.Y. washed dining R. curtains. Billie went out hen house to get eggs. (Kitchen and D.R.)(referring to her washing of curtains I believe)


Thursday, February 10th, 1944

Billie and Dorothea home sick. This morning I ironed curtains. Kennie and Dot up. Kennard and Dolores up with two beautiful pictures (Carkie). B took 7 doz eggs to S.Y. I ironed curtains and put them up.

Friday, February 11, 1944

Very cold. I washed. Didn't feel very good.
