The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

April 22 - 28,1944



Saturday, April 22, 1944

Mama came home from Kennard’s. I cooked. Went to town.


Sunday, April 23, 1944

Fern came up with Dorothea. Was there for dinner. Aunt Ava and Uncle Lewis came up. Here for supper. Bob’s folks came up. Bill didn’t work.


Monday, April 24, 1944

I did part of my washing. The machine broke. Bill fired it and it broke again. It snowed about 2 inches. Aunt Ava and Uncle Lewis called.


Tuesday, April 25, 1944

Billie’s bike came back from Portland. Still no washing machine. Cloudy today and raining tonight. Franey called from Boston. A blackout tonight.


Wednesday, April 26, 1944

I washed. Brud was up. Kennard and Dolores were up. Milan and Franey came. Milan on seven day furlong. Nice day.


Thursday, April 27, 1944 

Billie home for dinner. Bill, Betty and I went to town. Mama came up from Ferns to be here with Milan. Warm today. Milan and Franey went down to brook fishing.

April 28 Friday 1944

Wyvern got 2nd prize for prize speaking tonight. Nice day. Bob’s folks came up to say goodbye to Milan. Kids, Milan, Franey and I made fudge tonight. Good too.
