The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

January 15-21, 1944

January 15, 1944 - Saturday

Joy still here. Dorothea a little better. Bill went to work. Sold 2 doz eggs at shipyard. Billie went over to Aunt Linnies.


January 16, 1944 - Sunday

Kennard, Dolores and Brud was up. Sawed wood. Bill didn't work. Bob and Ronnie came for Joy. Blanche was home from hospital. Lila came over.


January 17, 1944 - Monday

I washed. Dorothea stayed at home. She is feeling better. Bill took 9 dozen eggs to S. Y.


January 18, 1944 - Tuesday

Did not do much outside regular work. Dorothea still home. Bill took 4 dozen eggs to S.Y. Our car as brought home. All overhauled.


January 19, 1944 - Wednesday

Washed floor, cooked. Kennard came up a few minutes. Dorothea went back to school after being sick. Billie went over to Raymonds this eve. No eggs to SY today. Mama knitting.


(at this point Nanny accidentally skipped a page and the 20th entry was written after the 22nd and 21st.)





January 20, 1944 - Thursday

Washed. Dot and Kennie up. Dot brought up some dandy rolls. Fire down to Clayt March (?) store tonight. No eggs to S.Y. Got Es letter foot was broken so the doctor office xrays.


January 21, 1944 - Friday

Cleaned up the house., ironed. Weldon came up to Aunt Linnies to go to dentist. Billie over there in eve. Warm.
