The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

January 29-February 4, 1944

Saturday, Jan. 29 1944

Went to town in AM. Got ready in PM to go to Ferns. Mama cooked.


Sunday, January 30, 1944



Dorothea, Betty and I went down to Ferns. Had a good time. Good choc. cake. Bill, Billie and Papa went ice fishing. Mama stayed home alone. Cold. Got a pickerel.


Monday, January 31, 1944

Washed. Dorothea brought a nice looking report card home.


Tuesday, February 1, 1944

Blanche went to hospital for x-rays. Mama went down there. Marshall Islands battle begun. Milan telephoned he is in hospital with broken foot. 2 doz S.Y.


Wednesday, February 2, 1944

Worked as usual today got the dishes washed before dark. Billie went over to Raymonds. Had supper early. 8 doz eggs to S.Y.

Thursday, February 3, 1944

Bill took 2 doz eggs to S.Y. Cold weather. I did y usual work. Ironed and washed.


Friday, February 4, 1944

K (can't make out the name) called to have me get Billy ready for school. Ann's baby had convulsons. Velma (Staley) has tonelitis (I'm guessing she meant tonsillitis). Bill took 1 doz egg to S.Y. Made my bread.
